Robotic LEGO photocopier: Z-axis mechanism

Hey everyone, as most of you already know, I’m responsible for the Z-Axis mechanism in the Enable my LEGO project. I am currently in the brainstorming stages of the project and I have a couple of ideas in mind.

My first idea would be to insert a rod into the backside holes of a LEGO brick. In order for the rod to stabilize, we need to use an expandable material such as sponge. then we can move it around freely. Once we are ready to detach the brick, we would utilize a  simple mechanism that can slide up or down on the rod.

My second idea is to use a tiny vacuum/suction device attached to the XY component. It will behave identically to my first idea, except we changed the method of moving the LEGO bricks.
