ADDIE is an industry- standard instructional model used to develop focused, aligned, and results-oriented training. It is a 5-step linear process that begins with a robust analysis stage where details about your company’s goals and learning needs are revealed. Although design, development, implementation, and evaluation are all part of the process, the analysis stage is arguably the most important, and often streamlines the rest of the process.
Even when updating existing learning, analysis is always the necessary first step to developing learning that drives results.
Critical needs are revealed in the Analysis stage
To bridge the gap between your company’s current state and desired state, you must have clarity on your learners and their needs. The analysis phase is centred on this. Identifying who your learners are, what they are expecting, and where they might experience friction and confusion will lead to an effective, tailored design. Ideally, missing pieces in your existing learning are also identified here so that they can be addressed in the design stage.
As you reveal more about your learners, you will gain an understanding of what instructional method(s) and learning formats will land best with them. This will help answer questions about how the learning content should be delivered to drive the best results.
Analysis aligns training to strategic goals
The second half of the analysis stage is where alignment to strategic goals takes place. As findings about your learners and their needs are connected to your strategic goals, details about what the learning experience needs to look like become clearer. As a result, metrics are defined, and the following questions are typically answered:
- What format should the learning experience be delivered in to drive the best results?
- How should the learning content be broken up so that it engages the learners?
- What media should be used to enhance the experience for these specific learners and at what points in the experience will it make the most impact?
Analysis can streamline design and development
In addition to aligning your learning plan to your strategic goals, the analysis stage provides essential clarity for subsequent stages. Many of the needs, gaps and metrics identified in the analysis stage guide the design phase, and as a result, accelerate the process. It answers many of the questions that typically arise in the design and development phases. Therefore, while the analysis stage may take longest out of all the stages in the ADDIE model, it results in a more efficient and more accurate process.
In some cases, business leaders may feel that they do not have the time for an analysis stage, and will jump into design and development. Most of the time, this inhibits efficiency and accuracy, and prolongs the process as the development team struggles to find solutions for challenges typically addressed in the analysis stage. Stepping back to do analysis will undoubtedly prolong this process even further. A proper analysis will prevent this from happening and simultaneously drive better results.
