Innovating Healthcare Education
Body Brave
Body Brave is a charity based in Hamilton, Ontario, providing accessible eating disorder treatment and support, as well as advancing community training and education.
Body Brave describes their mission as ‘Recovery for every body’, which means person-centred, compassionate care for anyone struggling with or at risk for an eating disorder.
The Need
Body Brave has fueled a tremendous move toward eating disorder awareness and support since it was founded in 2017. In just four years, they have supported hundreds of people, not losing momentum when they pivoted to fully virtual treatment early in 2020.
Body Brave has worked hard to eliminate barriers to education, support, and treatment of eating disorders, and wanted to expand the support they were providing. To that end, Body Brave identified the need to better aid physicians as they navigate their patients’ eating disorders.
The Challenge
To address the challenge of equipping physicians with the knowledge and tools to identify signs and symptoms of eating disorders, Body Brave needed an engaging course that would help to eliminate stigmas and demystify eating disorders.
They envisioned a solution that is self-paced (being cognizant of physicians’ often unpredictable schedules) and generates an empathetic connection in the learning physician.
The Solution
To achieve this goal, Body Brave collaborated with Enable Education to record and create instruction videos and build online content for self-directed learning.
Enable’s Learning Experience Design (LXD) team worked closely with Body Brave to determine what the learning outcomes for the course would be, and how they could achieve them in the most effective and efficient way. Our LXD team then created a course outline, effectively a course ‘blueprint’, which would later guide their development of the course.
Each element of the course was developed by working with Body Brave subject matter experts (SMEs). Our team got together with SMEs who shared their knowledge and lived experiences to be recorded for videos.
The videos, together with case studies, quizzes and assessments, as well as additional resources, were ‘wrapped’ together and deployed on Enable Education’s proprietary Learning Management System (LMS), Thinkscape.
The Outcome
This completed course, Eating Disorder Sensitive: Education for Physicians and Primary Care Providers, is intended to assist primary care providers, including family physicians and nurse practitioners, to improve their skills in assessing, diagnosing and effectively treating eating disorders.
The course covers content in three modules: Assessment, Monitoring and Management, and Patient Referral.
Each module consists of:
Instructional videos presented by expert medical practitioners
Lived experience videos - real stories from actual patients
Case studies
Interactive assessments to help you test your knowledge
Short quizzes
Additional resources for more information
The Eating Disorders course is a practical starting point to effectively optimize patient care for those experiencing challenges with eating disorders. The modules provide information that builds knowledge about these complex brain-based disorders, ultimately providing better treatment for more patients across Canada.
Each module presents learners with opportunities to:
understand how to assess, monitor, and refer patients with a variety of eating disorders
collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to optimize patient care
communicate compassionately with patients suffering with eating disorders
