Building Financial Resilience: Financial Empowerment and Problem-Solving Training

United Way Halton & Hamilton

The United Way Halton & Hamilton is committed to the strength and prosperity of the community. They believe a strong, supported, resilient community benefits everyone. To achieve this, United Way Halton & Hamilton provides a network of 106 local programs that act as a safety net so that those most vulnerable can access the supports they need.

The Training Need

As a community-centered non-profit, United Way Halton & Hamilton aims to make a lasting difference in people's lives and ensure that they achieve their long-term financial goals.

United Way recognized the incredible impact of online classes, offered through Home Suite Hope, a non-profit that unites a network of support services for single parents and their children. United Way then approached them with their Financial Empowerment & Problem Solving (FEPS) committee. The Credit Counselling Society joined the collaboration as subject matter experts. United Way had the vision, partners at Home Suite Hope, and financial experts to provide content. Enable Education had an experienced team to develop the learning. It was a great partnership.

United Way’s FEPS is an initiative that supports community members from poverty to possibility. FEPS aims to address the root cause of poverty – low income – through free tax filing, education, and financial support. The initiative aims to help individuals form habits that are integral to building financial empowerment and problem-solving.

The Challenge

United Way wanted to create training to support people in times of immediate financial crisis. The training also needed to connect people with one-on-one counselling, group workshops, online training, and other services. While United Way has the connection to experienced  subject matter experts in the Credit Counselling Society, Enable has a long-standing partnership creating learning solutions for non-profits and providing the learning design expertise to create the resources needed.

The Solution

Enable’s learning experience design (LXD) team collaborated closely with United Way and their partners to re-design content with improved topic sequencing, instructional methods, and eLearning formats for more engaged learning.

The learning solution included instructional videos and interactive eLearning lessons, while reflection questions and quizzes provide opportunities for learners to consider their progress and next steps. The four modules cover Credit and Debt, Payday Loans and High-Interest Lenders, Collection Agencies, and Credit Counselling Services.

The learning was created to support community members with financial literacy, helping them learn to better manage their money and providing support resources.

3 courses listed with graphics above the course titles. Courses listed are: Collection Agencies; Credit Counselling Services; Payday Loans and High-Interest Leaders.

The Outcome

Financial Empowerment & Problem Solving is a self-paced, interactive, and engaging educational course that provides online financial training for individuals. The learning provides critical information on financial literacy and provides opportunities for learners to consider their financial choices carefully.

Each module delivers relevant, practical information using a combination of slides, videos, interactions, and text-based eLearning. The learning supports financial empowerment and understanding a person’s rights and connects learners with support services at United Way Hamilton & Halton and the Credit Counselling Services.
